Behind The Gate

My second project. I based it on a gate which I live near. Although I know what was behind it, Lord Lambtons, I imagine what else could have been behind it. Like mythological creatures. So a few years ago I created a story which included witches and dinosaurs and other things like that. Then a few months ago I re-did it............ and stopped halfway through. One of my left projects, but it is something I want to complete.

So its one girl who goes behind the gate to find out whats behind it. First she meets some witches, then meets some half angel half human people who fly her off. She runs away from them and meets mermaids.... then I don't know. I haven't got that far yet. But I'm thinking pirates next. I haven't been on to it for a few months. It will be hard to get back into I think. A script on the way for it I think.

 Prologue

Legend has it behind the ancient, rusty forgotten gate lies many secrets. Secrets which the village people should never unveil. For many years people attempted to unlock the gate, but nothing would give. Only a key would open the padlock, which helped bind the silver chains around the steel bars. It was unbeknown to the village people of the gate ever to be opened. All they know is that it is hidden deep in the forest and its key is lost, and never to be found.

Rumours spread that dragons, witches, pirates and dinosaurs roamed the forest, but no one had dared go that far too actually find out. People went in groups to jump the gate, however they did not return. Some people said they were used as sacrifices and forced to watch others being burned alive. Some people said fear got the better of them and hung themselves from tree branches, leaving their shoes underneath them to mark territory. Some even said they were crucified and their bodies were fed to vultures.

Although all these different stories flew around one girl decided to go in alone. No one knew what she was planning, they all thought she was joking on and being sarcastic about it. But when the moment she jumped the gate everything changed…

Chapter 1: The Search For The Gate

Blue sky, sun blazing and the birds singing, it looks a good day. As I walk along the path cars rush past me making me jump. I’m incredibly twitchy it’s unreal right now. My stomach rumbles with fear. I don’t like that at all. The housing estate on my right looks happy, bright and cheerful. But when I look left at the forest, it brings the feeling of fear and dread to my heart. Looking over my shoulder one last time I make sure no one is there. I take a deep breath in, I look right, I look left, and then peg on to the other side of the road into the trees.

SNAP! Straight into a pile twigs and I fall face flat into grass. “Ow……” I moan and then stand up. Ahead of me there are tall trees, bushes with many poisonous berries and a very small footpath which is covered by the long grass. As I fight my way through I am scratched by the many branches and prickles sticking out. Blood pours down my arms, legs and face and I start to panic more.

No sign of the gate yet. I move faster and faster. Blood, sweat and tears trickle down my face, heart racing faster, and my legs are about to give in on me – BOOM! Straight into a tree. I fall flat on my back.

“Ahhhh!” I yell. Blood is spurting out of my nose and searing pain enters my brain. My nose is broken. Looking around frantically, and panicking I look for something to pull me up. Something black, furry and moving catches my left eye. A spider. A big, back, furry, scary looking spider. It looks like it’s been through nuclear waste and doubled in size. I feel my eyes widen in their sockets. Then, for some reason, I throw myself at the tree trying to get away from it. Climbing up the tree I manage to grip a dirty, thick branch covering myself in mud.

“Urgh” I say looking at my front caked in mud. The spider is now climbing up the tree. I freeze into shock, I feel my arms and legs growing col and my heart drop below my stomach “Ahh!” I jump backwards hitting my head off something hard. I grit my teeth to block out the pain and then sprint through the bushes ahead of me. BANG! I hit something metal.

“Oww,” I say out loud again. Pulling the branches and vines that are in the way I start to reveal a very rusty and dirty gate. I’ve found the gate; the feeling of joy arouses the air as I feel the bars.  Then I remember the spider after me. In a quick progression I grab the bars and jump it. Looking back I see the spider stop on the other side. It backs off a little, and then turns and goes off. “Phew”

Chapter 2: The Start Of A Long Journey

I found the gate. I finally found the gate that everyone was talking about. Ahead of me is a long windy path. I wonder where it leads to. And I wonder what I will find. Now I feel safe knowing that the spider turned back. My heart rate has gone back to normal and now I'm cold anddrowsy.

Shall I continue on? Or turn back? No, I must continue, I need to continue, or people will think I am a coward. I have an awkward feeling that someone is watching my every move. I'm trying not to get paranoid, but its not working.  Moving forward I look into the trees in case anything jumps out. The track bends several times and sometimes splits into two, and then merges back to one. There is no wind, the trees above me block the sun and not a sound is to be heard. It feels completely dead. And I'm starting to feel dead inside now. My heart rate is now speeding back up.

SNAP! I freeze to the spot and my heart drops below my stomach again. After five minutes of waiting not a sound is to be heard. I look down, and realise that I stood on a twig. "Phew" I whisper to myself. Carrying on I take a sigh of relief. The track bends several more times, will this ever end? I'm feeling more comfortable now; there is no sign of life...  yet. I don't know if this is a good thing. The taste of blood comes back. I'm covered it mud, sweat and blood. I feel like someone has beaten me to a pulp and taken my life away from me.

As the track goes on the trees seem to be getting taller and the path narrower. I'm starting to feel like a prisoner being led to an electric chair. I wonder what I will come across, humans? Animals? Or even manimals? Only time will tell, I don't even know if there is an end to this track. This could be a waste of time for all I know.

Clutching on to my love angel necklace I remember the people close to my heart, my Mum, my Dad and my sister. The people I truly care for and love the most. Tears start to drip down my face as the fear of never returning home clouds over my mind. I must not think negative. I must think positive.  I came here to see what is behind the gate. And I will return home. Yeah... that's more like it.

It gets darker and darker and I glance over my shoulder more often. I feel the end of the path is near, and I'm not going to like what I see at the end. Suddenly there is no more track, just grass, and a very large tree in the way. Is this it? Is this the end? Is this is what is behind the gate? Just a big old tree? I look around me and see nothing but trees, grass and dirt. All of a sudden a high pitched cackle comes from nowhere, and sends my body into shock and leaving me gobsmacked. Witches...
